Does Running Drive Your Skin Crazy?

Running bestows a multitude of positive health benefits: improved cardiovascular fitness; increased muscular- and bone strength; maintenance of a healthy body composition; reduced risk of certain diseases; greater mental astuteness and sense of well-being…to name but a few. Running can also enhance our social lives and provide opportunities for personal growth as we set- and achieve fitness-related goals.
It’s no wonder my client Jo Wood from Aspire2 is truly addicted to this beautiful sport. When asked to name any negative effects of running, she would be lost for words. However, if really pushed for an answer, she would sheepishly admit that when training for long- distance races in the height of the Australian summer, it does adversely impact her complexion.
After a 5-6-hour run in 30-degree heat, Jo invariably feels on top of the world. But the next day, the effect of pores clogged by prolonged sweating and sunscreen is not pretty. Typically, her chin and forehead suffer from an acute acne break-out for up to a week. She has experienced this for years, but given the horde of running-related benefits, she put it down as something that can’t be helped (rather like her running addiction!).
I am passionate about finding customised solutions for my clients' needs, and I wanted to see how the multi-award- winning Dermalux® LED Phototherapy technique could help Jo with her post running skin condition. Dermalux® is a non-invasive approach to rejuvenating and refining the appearance of a dull, tired or irritated complexion. Just one 30-minute Dermalux® session visibly reduced Jo's post-run acne within 1-2 days.
A complete overhaul of Jo's skin-care regimen came next – substitution of her usual cleanser, exfoliator and sunscreen with equivalents from the asap cosmeceutical skincare range – rapidly afforded further improvements. A second 30-min Dermalux® treatment helped settle residual redness and inflammation, and continued use of the asap skincare products has resulted in a more content complexion during this month-long trial.
Currently in-training for the Ultra-Trail Australia (UTA) 100K race, Jo has been clocking up plenty of K’s under the hot summer sun. The combination of Dermalux® Therapy and asap skincare products has made looking in the mirror ‘the morning after’ much less scary for Jo.
If you experience running-induced acne or other skin-related issues, come in for a consultation at House of Samara. In Jo's own words ..... "Being reminiscent of a Bali Resort, reward yourself with an appointment even if only for some precious 'me-time'. You will emerge pampered, refreshed and relaxed…and feeling as wonderful as if you’d just returned from a really, really long run"https://aspire2fitness.com.au/
